Pedagogies of Place: A Faculty Development Workshop About Teaching in Queens
Organized and facilitated by CETLL, Lindsey Albracht (English), Eric Goldfischer (Urban Studies), Soniya Munshi (CETLL/Urban Studies), and Amy Wan (English)
Co-sponsored by the QC Library’s OER Initiative, funded by N.Y.S Open Educational Resources Grant
This three day in-person workshop invites QC faculty to deepen our understanding of the place we call Queens, as a campus and as a set of communities and neighborhoods. Drawing from interdisciplinary approaches to place-based education and pedagogies of writing, we will explore how critical and reflective engagement with our local contexts can inform our teaching practices. The sessions will include a mix of hands-on activities, hearing from different people across campus, and time to work on projects.
Dates: June 10, 11, and 12, 2025
Time: 9:00 am – 3:30 pm
Where: ºì¶¹ÊÓƵ campus; location TBD
Applications due Monday, April 28, 11:59 p.m.
This workshop will support faculty to:
- Learn more about the rich histories and wide possibilities of pedagogical resources and relationships in and at Queens
- Work on a specific teaching-related project that actively engages with local context in some form (e.g. creating course assignments; developing course materials; (re-)designing syllabi; developing relationships with community-based organizations and/or off-campus institutions)
- Consider the teaching of writing and communication within context (whether disciplinary, institutional, personal or political) to students through meaningful assignment design, feedback, assignment sequencing, and cultivating voice
- Build community with colleagues across the college
Faculty participants will commit to:
- Attend the workshop in-person on June 10, 11, and 12
- Review workshop materials (e.g. readings, videos) as assigned
- Develop and share an open educational teaching resource and brief reflection (250-500 words) to CETLL by June 30, 2025
Faculty that fulfill the above commitments will receive a $2000 stipend and a certificate of completion.
Who should apply?
This workshop is open to all faculty members at ºì¶¹ÊÓƵ. No expertise or previous training is necessary, and all disciplines are welcome. The seminar will be a chance to talk about teaching and learn from peers; it will be welcoming to all participants who are interested in being more comfortable with their teaching.
We especially encourage pre-tenure/CCE and part-time faculty to apply as well as mid-career faculty who would like the opportunity to re-engage with their teaching.
