Pedagogies of Place: A Faculty Development Workshop About Teaching in Queens

This workshopÌýinvites QC faculty toÌý³¦´Ç²Ô²õ¾±»å±ð°ùÌýtheir pedagogy in the context of the place we call Queens.ÌýDrawing from interdisciplinary approaches to place-based education and pedagogies of writing,Ìýthis three-day in-personÌýworkshop will include a mix of hands-on activities, hearing from different people across campus, and time to work on projects.Ìý(See our Commons site for )Ìý

This workshop will support faculty to:

  • Learn more about place-based pedagogical practices and the specificity ofÌýutilizingÌýplace-based pedagogy in Queens
  • Work on a teachingÌýproject that actively engages with local context (e.g.ÌýÌýcreating course assignments,Ìýdeveloping course materials,Ìý(re-)designing syllabi,Ìýdeveloping relationships with community-based organizations and/or off-campus institutions)Ìý
  • Consider the teaching of writing and communication within context (whether disciplinary, institutional,ÌýpersonalÌýor political) to students through meaningful assignment design, feedback, assignment sequencing, and cultivating voiceÌý
  • Build community with colleagues across the college

 

Faculty participants will commit to:

  • Attend the workshop in-person on June 15, 16, 17
  • Review workshop materials (e.g. readings, videos) as assigned
  • Develop an to be shared through CETLL and by June 30, 2026.Ìý Revisions will be due by August 1, 2026.

Participants that fulfill the above commitments will receive a $2,000 stipend and a certificate of completion.

Who should apply?

This workshop is open to all faculty members at ºì¶¹ÊÓÆµ.

No expertise or previous training is necessary, and all disciplines are welcome. The seminar will be a chance to talk about teaching and learn from peers; it will be welcoming to all participants who are interested in being more comfortable with their teaching.ÌýÌý

We especially encourage pre-tenure/CCE and part-time faculty to apply as well as mid-career faculty who would like the opportunity to re-engage with their teaching.Ìý
