The syllabus contains essential information about the course and relevant department policies. A minimum of an hour a week is required. Additional office hours may be scheduled by appointment.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Adjunct faculty:<\/strong><\/em> \u200bAdjunct faculty who are paid the seventh professional hour must maintain some office hours, as indicated in this <a title=\"memorandum from the CUNY University Registrar, August 20, 2014.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/05\/Duties-Adjuncts-Additional-Hour.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memorandum from the CUNY University Registrar, August 20, 2014.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Credit hours<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hesc.ny.gov\/financial-aid-professionals\/programs-policies-and-procedures\/student-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York State Education Department definition of a semester hour<\/a> (at least 15 hours of instruction and at least 30 hours of supplementary assignments)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/policy.cuny.edu\/policyimport\/board_meeting_minutes\/1978\/document.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CUNY Board of Trustees adoption of the NYS Education Department semester hour definition<\/a>\u200b (no. 6, item A, p. 3)<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Credit-Hour guidelines PDF\" href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/05\/CUNY-Registrar_-_Credit-Hour-Guidelines.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Credit-Hour guidelines<\/a> (from the CUNY Registrar)<\/li>\n<li>Credit hour requirements also apply during intersession and summer session<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Missed Classes<\/strong><br \/>All planned absences for legitimate professional or personal reasons must be approved in advance by the department chairperson or program director. In such cases, the instructor is responsible for arranging for a makeup class or alternative instructional activities. When an illness or unforeseen emergency results in the cancellation of a class, the instructor should notify the chairperson as soon as possible and arrange for notices to be posted informing students of the cancellation. In the event of an extended absence of the instructor, the chairperson is responsible for arranging for continuing instruction in the course.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Final examinations<\/strong><br \/>\u200b\u200bFinal examinations and records of midterm grades and other course work for all students must be kept on file in the department office; see guidelines on <a href=\"http:\/\/qc.cuny.edu\/provost\/retention-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retention<\/a> of selected academic records.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a
