As part of our evaluation research activities, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE) routinely designs and fields surveys to assess progress on college-wide goals. We also assist with all aspects of program, departmental, and grant-funded survey projects, including instrument design, construct validity, sample creation, administration, analysis of responses and summaries of results (subject to availability and the existing survey schedule).<\/p>\n

Learn more about Course Evaluations here.<\/a><\/p>\n Needs Assessment and Satisfaction Surveys<\/strong><\/p>\n The OIE routinely administers needs-assessment and student satisfaction surveys in collaboration with the college’s student support units. These surveys provide data to support the continual improvement of QC services. We also offer template forms that departments may customize and field on their own. See our Student Services Feedback Template<\/a> (Duplicate in MS Forms<\/a>) or our Workshop Evaluation Template<\/a> (Duplicate in MS Forms<\/a>).<\/p>\n QC Wellness Survey<\/strong><\/p>\n The QC Wellness Survey was developed in response to a growing national awareness of student mental health as a critical component of academic success and the overall quality of the student experience. Based on several validated measures of psychological well-being and mental health challenges, the results guide programming to support all students. See the 2025 Report on Student Wellness.<\/a><\/p>\n Student Experience Survey (CUNY SES)<\/strong><\/p>\n The CUNY SES is a university-wide sample survey of undergraduates administered every two years. It provides data on student demographics, socio-economic status, work experiences, course availability, experiential learning opportunities and reasons for transfer. The OIE incorporates findings from the CUNY SES into various reports. See our 2022 CUNY SES results here<\/a>.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_tab][et_pb_tab title=”New Students” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n The New Student Survey<\/strong> is a long-standing OIE project that helps us gauge how well the College is meeting its goals in supporting students’ transition to college, connecting new students to QC resources, and helping new students connect with one another. Research shows that the quality of students\u2019 experiences and their level of engagement in their first semester of college can have a substantial impact on students\u2019 persistence and sense of belonging. The OIE surveys new students every fall and the findings are shared with multiple academic and administrative departments to inform early college programming and support.<\/p>\n Learn more in our Fall 2024 New Student Survey Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_tab][et_pb_tab title=”Graduating Students” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n End-of-Program Assessment Surveys<\/strong><\/p>\n These surveys help department chairs and program directors understand their students\u2019 experiences in relation to program learning goals and advisement, professional development opportunities, DEI and community building, and obstacles to program completion. Faculty may see our Program Assessment Survey Template<\/a> for examples of appropriate question items and answer options.<\/p>\n CUNY Cap and Gown Survey<\/strong><\/p>\n This CUNY survey asks graduating students about their educational and employment plans, career preparation, satisfaction with their college experience, and their QC values-aligned curricular and co-curricular experiences. All students that apply for graduation gain access to the survey in CUNYfirst. The OIE promotes the survey via targeted student mailers, and incorporates the data into our reports on students\u2019 career outcomes and assessments of the ºì¶¹ÊÓƵ mission.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_tab][et_pb_tab title=”Alumni” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n First-Destinations Survey<\/strong><\/p>\n Every fall, the OIE administers the First-Destination Survey to the previous graduating cohort (i.e., the Class of 202X). This survey asks graduates about their career activity six months out from graduation, including types of employment, starting salary, and further education. The OIE merges the survey data with other alumni outcomes data (National Student Clearinghouse, LinkedIn, and CUNY Cap and Gown data) and reports the findings to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).<\/p>\n By combining results from these sources, we were able to obtain outcomes information on 75% of the undergraduates and 71% of the master\u2019s graduates from the Class of 2024. See our report on the Class of 2024<\/a>, or learn more about Alumni Outcomes here<\/a>.<\/p>\n Program Alumni Surveys<\/strong><\/p>\n When more targeted information is needed, the OIE assists academic programs in surveying their alumni. These surveys provide information on how well alumni are succeeding in their chosen field, which can inform improvements to programmatic advisement and career preparation. Faculty may see our Alumni Outcomes Survey Template<\/a> for examples of appropriate question items and response options.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_tab][et_pb_tab title=”DEI” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Survey<\/strong><\/p>\n Implemented in 2022 and fielded to all active students, faculty, and staff, the QC DEI Survey is a trend study designed to track over time, and overall, whether or not progress on our goals for DEI is taking place. Survey items are informed by (a) the 2021-2026 Strategic Plan, (b) an analysis of QC\u2019s results from the 2019 COACHE survey by gender and racial background, and (c) the literature on measurement of DEI-related variables, including sense of belonging, microaggressions, and barriers to college completion.<\/p>\n Note: Login with your QC M365 account<\/a> is required<\/em>.<\/p>\n Non-Returning Student Survey<\/strong><\/p>\n Every other summer, the OIE fields this survey to the students who were enrolled in the previous fall semester but did not re-enroll the following spring. The survey asks former students about their experience at QC and their reasons for leaving. Results guide programming to support equity and student belonging. See the 2024 Report on Non-returning Undergraduates<\/a>.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_tab][et_pb_tab title=”Employees” _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n COACHE Survey<\/strong><\/p>\n The\u00a0Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE)<\/a> survey asks tenured and tenure-track faculty about satisfaction across various areas of faculty life including teaching, scholarship, service, academic leadership, governance, and work-life balance. While the survey itself is not fielded by the OIE, the OIE assists in interpreting the findings, fielding follow-up surveys to faculty, and advocating for improvements to the faculty experience at ºì¶¹ÊÓƵ. Learn more about the most recent COACHE Follow-up Project below.<\/p>\n 2023 COACHE Follow-up Project<\/a><\/p>\n <\/p>\n QC WORKPLACE Survey<\/strong><\/p>\n After the completion of the 2023 COACHE Follow-up Project, we took the initiative to design and field a comparable survey to QC’s non-teaching staff. The QC Workplace Survey asks full-time non-teaching staff about their experiences working at QC — their work-life balance, professional development opportunities,\u00a0and departmental climate and support. Like the COACHE, it is fielded every four years and helps the OIE to advocate for, and assess progress on, improvements to the employee experience at ºì¶¹ÊÓƵ. Learn more about the project below.<\/p>\n QC Faculty Development Survey<\/strong><\/p>\n Developed in close partnership with the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership (CETLL), this survey represents the first college-wide invitation for all QC faculty to articulate their interests in training opportunities and institutional resources across six faculty development areas: pedagogy, student engagement, learning assessment, instructional technologies, career- and community-connected learning, and faculty leadership development and scholarship. Note that this report provides a detailed look at the survey response data only. A forthcoming companion report from CETLL will situate these findings within its current projects and programs, and include forward-looking discussion of how the college will translate the faculty feedback into coordinated initiatives.<\/p>\n QC Interfolio User Experience Survey<\/strong><\/p>\n In spring 2026, the OIE partnered with the Provost’s Office to survey faculty and administrators about their experiences with Interfolio’s Faculty180 and Review, Promotion & Tenure (RPT) modules. The survey received 116 responses (18% response rate). Here’s how we can help:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n To request OIE survey assistance,<\/strong> please reach out to Lizandra Friedland, Associate Director of Survey Research and Assessment at qc.oie@qc.cuny.edu<\/a> with answers to the following:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n IMPORTANT NOTES<\/strong><\/p>\n (1) From planning to reporting, the amount of time a survey project takes will vary<\/strong> depending on the scope of the project and its target population. Generally, OIE holds a series of planning meetings with the PI to gather information on the project\u2019s purpose, audience, and timeline. After survey implementation, the results will be analyzed and presented within a report for informed decision making. Survey projects that support student success, program development, learning assessment, or strategic plan implementation take precedent.<\/p>\n (2) Please contact the OIE before attempting to create a survey<\/strong> so that the methodology can be discussed ahead of time. Department chairs and program directors may see our Program Assessment Survey Template<\/a>\u00a0or our\u00a0Alumni Outcomes Survey Template<\/a>\u00a0for examples of appropriate question items and answer options.<\/p>\n (3)\u00a0 We request that programs and departments please<\/strong> keep us informed of surveys fielded to the QC community. <\/strong>The OIE regularly fields its own surveys to students, faculty, and staff, and this information will help us avoid survey fatigue and low response rates, which can negatively affect important projects at the College.<\/p>\n (4) No one outside the OIE may access\/use the OIE SurveyMonkey account<\/strong> because sensitive student data is incorporated into the software. \u00a0However,\u00a0<\/strong>all QC members have access to\u00a0Microsoft Forms<\/a>, which is similar to SurveyMonkey in almost every regard.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Other Projects (MS Forms)” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” toggle_level=”h5″ toggle_font=”||||||||” open=”off”]<\/p>\n Smaller projects may be fielded without OIE assistance and oversight. Microsoft Forms is part of the Microsoft Office 365<\/a> family of products available to the QC community, and can be used to create custom surveys and polls. The platform offers automatic Excel integration, Microsoft Teams sharing, multi-language forms, FERPA and ADA compliance, conditional branching, anonymous submissions, automatic summary charting, reporting dashboards, and more.<\/p>\n The OIE can help you learn how to use Microsoft Forms, help you create a questionnaire or template, and\/or review your questionnaire to improve its validity and reliability. Please give us at least a 3-week lead when requesting our assistance.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Below are our TEMPLATE forms, which you can duplicate and customize:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n If designing your own survey:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Here are some helpful resources on Microsoft Forms:<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Study Recruitment of ºì¶¹ÊÓƵ” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” toggle_level=”h5″ toggle_font=”||||||||” open=”off”]<\/p>\n To assist faculty with their research, connect students to faculty scholarship, and to ensure that the QC community is not over-surveyed (i.e., to avoid survey fatigue and attrition), the Study Recruitment Review Committee (SRRC) reviews all requests to recruit QC participants for IRB approved studies.<\/p>\n Researchers interested in recruiting from the QC community must submit their requests to the SRRC here:<\/p>\n Please note that requests for recruitment can only be made after a study has received IRB approval.<\/p>\n If SRRC approval is granted, the study will be posted to the QC Opportunities to Participate in Research website<\/a>, which is promoted regularly to QC students via newsletters and other announcements. ºì¶¹ÊÓƵ does not allow researchers to survey our students directly because the college regularly fields it owns student surveys. In cases where the study population very specific, researchers will be directed to the chairs of the relevant departments to coordinate study recruitment in partnership with them.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_accordion_item][\/et_pb_accordion][dsm_text_divider header=”Response Privacy” text_alignment=”left” color=”#E71939″ divider_weight=”4px” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” header_level=”h4″ header_text_align=”left” header_text_color=”#5e5e5e” header_font_size=”20px” max_width=”100%” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/dsm_text_divider][et_pb_accordion _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_accordion_item title=” Anonymous Surveys” open=”on” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n In anonymous surveys, no identifiable information is collected or stored. Additionally, surveys are carefully designed to ensure that respondents cannot be identified during data analysis.<\/p>\n To ensure data integrity and accurate response rates, and to allow participants to exit a survey and return to complete at a later time, the OIE utilizes SurveyMonkey email collectors under anonymous settings. The SurveyMonkey software generates unique survey invitations, but these invitations cannot be linked to responses in any way.\u00a0<\/p>\n <\/p>\n [\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=” Confidential Surveys” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n In confidential surveys, the responses remain private, but the OIE maintains specific respondent information for analytical purposes. This allows us to better understand patterns and trends across different groups, such as major, class standing, or other relevant characteristics without asking for this information within the survey.<\/p>\n Only the OIE can access respondent information, and this data is used exclusively for analysis.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Respondents’ personal identities and survey responses are not shared. Survey results are reported in aggregate (summary form) only.
