{"id":7527,"date":"2022-10-24T12:27:53","date_gmt":"2022-10-24T16:27:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/library.qc.cuny.edu\/?p=7527"},"modified":"2022-10-24T12:27:53","modified_gmt":"2022-10-24T16:27:53","slug":"open-access-week-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/library\/2022\/10\/24\/open-access-week-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Open Access Week 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This last week of October, we are once again celebrating Open Access Week! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Open Access?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/library.qc.cuny.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IG-English-Multi-Ocean.png\" alt=\"International Open Access Week Ocean\" class=\"wp-image-7529\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open access is all about distributing scholarly research without financial or other access barriers.&nbsp; This helps readers, especially those who don\u2019t have access to institutional subscriptions, and it helps authors, who can gain a broader audience for their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open access can be achieved in many different ways. While you may have heard that many publishers offer open access, either by default for all publications or selectively via a \u201chybrid\u201d model, open access can also mean making your work available in an institutional repository, like <a href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CUNY Academic Works<\/a>, or a subject repository, like arXiv (or one of many others, depending on your field!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open access does <strong>not <\/strong>always involve paying a fee as the author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many open access publishers do not charge fees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open access via self-archiving in a repository is free, and almost all publishers allow it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can learn more about open access in this <a href=\"https:\/\/qc-cuny.libguides.com\/scholarly-communications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">set of guides<\/a> covering related issues, or you could contact the library\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/library.qc.cuny.edu\/profile\/nancy-foasberg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scholarly communication librarian<\/a>!&nbsp; I can answer questions about publisher policies, evaluating prospective publishers, depositing to CUNY Academic Works, making yourself and your work more visible, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">International Open Access Week 2022<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The theme for <a href=\"https:\/\/sparcopen.org\/news\/2022\/theme-for-open-access-week-2022-open-for-climate-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Open Access Week 2022<\/a> is climate justice. How does open access promote climate justice?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the <a href=\"https:\/\/sparcopen.org\/news\/2022\/theme-for-open-access-week-2022-open-for-climate-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">words of SPARC<\/a> (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Openness can create pathways to more equitable knowledge sharing and serve as a means to address the inequities that shape the impacts of climate change and our response to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s focus on Climate Justice seeks to encourage connection and collaboration among the climate movement and the international open community. Sharing knowledge is a human right, and tackling the climate crisis requires the rapid exchange of knowledge across geographic, economic, and disciplinary boundaries.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep an eye out for CUNY events related to open access and climate justice. While schedules did not align in a way that allowed these events to happen during the designated Open Access Week, these issues continue to be relevant, and we plan to offer something soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Events: Understanding New Guidelines for Federally Funded Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The library <em>is<\/em> holding an event on October 26, 2022 on the new guidelines for federally funded research! Please join us.
