Fascinating, important research is happening here at&nbsp;QC&nbsp;and&nbsp;we want you to know about it!&nbsp;Sometimes&nbsp;(but not always)&nbsp;this series&nbsp;may feature several&nbsp;works on related topics; other times&nbsp;it will simply feature a few works of interest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>All the works featured in this series are available to read and download for free&nbsp;from <a href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CUNY Academic Works<\/a>.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ºì¶¹ÊÓÆµ and the&nbsp;Pandemic&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In&nbsp;the midst of&nbsp;the long public health emergency&nbsp;of&nbsp;COVID-19, scientists and scholars from all disciplines have done important research to help us better understand both the virus itself and the social effects of the pandemic. CUNY faculty have been very active in these efforts.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CUNY Academic&nbsp;Works<\/a>,&nbsp;CUNY\u2019s institutional repository, has a collection highlighting&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\">COVID-19 research by CUNY Authors<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Important research has been carried out across CUNY, but for the purposes of this blog post,&nbsp;I would like to point out some research by&nbsp;ºì¶¹ÊÓÆµ (QC)&nbsp;authors in particular.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medicine and Public Health&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John Dennehy&nbsp;(Biology)<\/strong>,&nbsp;led a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dennehylab.org\/people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">team of researchers<\/a>&nbsp;developing a protocol to detect COVID-19 in wastewater, which was adopted by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection to monitor the prevalence of COVID in New York City.&nbsp;Aside from John Dennehy,&nbsp;authors credited in these articles&nbsp;included&nbsp;QC&nbsp;graduate and undergraduate students&nbsp;Kristin Cheung, Anna Gao,&nbsp;Sherin&nbsp;Kanoly, Michelle Markman,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kaung&nbsp;Myat&nbsp;Sun,&nbsp;as well as other&nbsp;researchers from across CUNY. This research has implications for the study of health behavior around COVID.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1436&amp;context=qc_pubs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Is Exposure to Epidemic Associated with Older Adults\u2019 Health Behavior? Evidence from China\u2019s 2002-2004 SARS Outbreak<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Social Effects of the Pandemic&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">QC faculty have also examined the social and economic effects of the pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=lJFS2cIAAAAJ&amp;hl=en&amp;oi=ao\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cliff Chen<\/a>&nbsp;(Education and Community Programs)<\/strong>, along with&nbsp;graduate students&nbsp;Elena Byrne, and Tanya V\u00e9lez&nbsp;studied the impact of the pandemic on families with children, showing the greater impact of the pandemic on lower-income families and families of color:&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1484&amp;context=qc_pubs\" target=\"_blank\">Impact of the 2020 Pandemic of COVID-19 on Families with School-Aged Children in the United States: Roles of&nbsp;Income Level and Race<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gc.cuny.edu\/Page-Elements\/Academics-Research-Centers-Initiatives\/Doctoral-Programs\/Urban-Education\/Faculty-Bios\/Daisuke-Akiba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daisuke Akiba<\/a>&nbsp;(Division of Education)<\/strong>&nbsp;has written about&nbsp;anti-Asian racism in schools during the pandemic, recommending some steps schools can take to protect Asian-American students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1482&amp;context=qc_pubs\" target=\"_blank\">Reopening America&#8217;s Schools During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Protecting Asian Students&nbsp;From&nbsp;Stigma and&nbsp;Discrimination<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tech industry has profited during the pandemic.&nbsp;<strong>ShinJoung&nbsp;Yeo&nbsp;(Media Studies)<\/strong>&nbsp;examined the relationship between tech companies and health care&nbsp;in the context of COVID-19:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1483&amp;context=qc_pubs\" target=\"_blank\">Tech Companies and Public Health Care in the Ruins of COVID<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teaching and Learning&nbsp;during&nbsp;the Pandemic&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, QC faculty have also spent the pandemic&nbsp;teaching.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=K-kK4yYAAAAJ&amp;hl=en&amp;oi=ao\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bradley W.&nbsp;Bergey<\/a>&nbsp;(Secondary Education and Youth Services)<\/strong>&nbsp;addressed remote pedagogy during the pandemic in:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1412&amp;context=qc_pubs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Using Motivation Design Principles&nbsp;to Teach&nbsp;Screencasting&nbsp;in Online Teacher Education Courses<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;library\u2019s&nbsp;own&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/library.qc.cuny.edu\/profile\/leila-walker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leila Walker<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;wrote&nbsp;about&nbsp;how remote instruction combines the classroom with more private spaces&nbsp;in:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1488&amp;context=qc_pubs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Intimacy and Interruption in Remote Library Instruction&nbsp;<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/library.qc.cuny.edu\/profile\/annie-tummino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Annie&nbsp;Tummino<\/a><\/strong>, also of the library,&nbsp;worked with partners at the Queens Public Library to host virtual events on social justice, including a roundtable on xenophobia during COVID-19. Together, they created a poster about this experience:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1450&amp;context=qc_pubs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cHow Can We Do Better?\u201d: Empowering Diverse Voices through an Academic\/Public Library Partnership<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of a new series of&nbsp;blog&nbsp;posts featuring faculty publications in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CUNY Academic Works<\/a>.&nbsp;Academic Works&nbsp;is a service of the CUNY Libraries dedicated to collecting and providing access to the research, scholarship, and creative and pedagogical work of the City University of New York.
