Secondhand smoke can adversely affect fellow students or staff, particularly those with pulmonary disease.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Health Benefits of Quitting<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>20 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; Your heart rate and blood pressure drop.<\/li>\n<li><strong>12 hours<\/strong> &#8211; The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2 weeks to 3 months<\/strong> &#8211; Circulation improves and lung function increases.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1 to 9 months after quitting<\/strong> &#8211; Coughing and shortness of breath decrease.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1 year after quitting<\/strong> &#8211; Excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a continuing smoker.<\/li>\n<li><strong>5 years after quitting<\/strong> &#8211; Risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, and bladder are cut in half. Cervical cancer risk falls to that of a nonsmoker. Stroke risk can fall to that of a nonsmoker after 2 to 5 years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>10 years after quitting<\/strong> &#8211; Risk of dying from lung cancer is about half that of a person who is still smoking. The risk of cancer of the larynx and pancreas decreases.<\/li>\n<li><strong>15 years after quitting<\/strong> &#8211; Risk of coronary heart disease is back to that of a nonsmoker\u2019s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Quit to s\u200bave<\/strong> &#8211; A pack of cigarettes costs more than $11 in New York City.
