Flushing, NY, December 9, 2024\u2014The ºì¶¹ÊÓƵ Choral Society (QCCS) will perform Haydn\u2019s Nelson Mass<\/em> and Vaughan Williams\u2019 Dona Nobis Pacem<\/em> on Sunday, December 15, at 4 pm in Colden Auditorium of the Kupferberg Center for the Arts. Originally called the Mass for Troubled Times, Haydn\u2019s choral work is associated with Admiral Horatio Nelson\u2019s victory over Napoleon. Williams\u2019 work is a plea for peace that juxtaposes words from the Latin Mass with poetry by Walt Whitman.<\/p>\n The concert will conclude with the final anthem from\u00a01001 Voices: A Symphony for a New America, <\/em>which reimagines \u201cThe New Colossus\u201d\u2014the poem by Emma Lazarus inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty\u2014as an alternative national anthem. It includes the well-known line, \u201cGive me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” A project of\u00a0EarSay<\/a>, 1001 Voices<\/em> was composed by Frank London, a trumpeter associated with klezmer and world music, with a libretto by Judith Sloan. The QCCS will be joined by over 200 local high school and middle school student singers for this performance, representing a vision for a hopeful and harmonious future.<\/p>\n Lazarus, a writer and activist, composed the \u201cThe New Colossus\u201d in 1883, inspired by her Sephardic Jewish heritage and her work with refugees and immigrants. The poem was published in the New York Times<\/em> and Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World<\/em>.<\/p>\n Concert soloists include alumna Jennifer Grimaldi Toohey, soprano, and Andrew Wannigman, baritone, faculty members in voice at the college\u2019s Aaron Copland School of Music. School of Music graduate students pursuing Advanced Performer\u2019s Certificates in voice, including Jinping Li, soprano; Zhe Nancy Xiong, mezzo-soprano; and Woojin Dong, tenor, will also perform.<\/p>\n Tickets are $25 and $5 for students with a valid QCID. For special family pricing, contact Emily John at qcchoralsociety@gmail.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n Founded in 1941, the ºì¶¹ÊÓƵ Choral Society (QCCS) is “a singing organization of and for the public, students and staff of ºì¶¹ÊÓƵ.” The Society typically performs two concerts per year with orchestra\u2014in December and May\u2014devoted to the great masterpieces of choral literature such as Verdi\u2019s Requiem<\/em>, Beethoven\u2019s Missa Solemnis,<\/em> Bach\u2019s Magnificat,<\/em> and Handel\u2019s Messiah<\/em>. The QCCS has also performed multiple premieres of new compositions, including works commissioned by the Queens Symphony Orchestra.
