Philosophy and Goals

      The English and Language Arts Education Program is designed to prepare teachers as educational practitioners, leaders, and reformers who can address the complex challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. The philosophy guiding the English program is social justice oriented and grounded in the social, psychological, cultural, and linguistic theories of language and literacy growth in adolescence, as well as research findings in language and literacy teaching and learning. This philosophy informs teacher practice in literature, composition, and language.

      At the undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and master’s levels, our goals are to provide opportunities for prospective teachers to establish a solid content knowledge base, and to acquire the critical awareness, pedagogical practices, and professional dispositions necessary to become effective teachers and critically reflective practitioners.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_url=”https://www.qc.cuny.edu/academics/seys/wp-content/uploads/sites/93/2025/03/SEYS_EnglishEducation_Flyer_SP25-1.pdf” url_new_window=”on” button_text=”SEYS ENGLISH EDUCATION BROCHURE” button_alignment=”center” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_border_color=”#000000″ global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_button][et_pb_text ul_position=”inside” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”Open Sans||||||||” text_font_size=”16px” header_4_font=”Open Sans|600|||on||||” header_4_text_color=”#000000″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

Undergraduate Major in English Education (BA) Advanced Initial Certificate (Post-Baccalaureate) in English Education: Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in English Education Master of Science in English Education (MSEd) [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.17.1″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”|||20px|false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”20px|||0px|false|false” custom_padding_phone=”20px|||0px|false|false” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|phone” border_width_left=”1px” border_width_top_tablet=”1px” border_width_top_phone=”1px” border_width_top_last_edited=”on|desktop” border_width_left_tablet=”0px” border_width_left_phone=”0px” border_width_left_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”Open Sans||||||||” text_font_size=”16px” header_4_font=”Open Sans|600|||on||||” header_4_text_color=”#000000″ text_orientation_tablet=”center” text_orientation_phone=”center” text_orientation_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Dr. Lakisha Odlum – Graduate Students Dr. Wendy Tronrud – Undergraduate & Graduate Students [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.1″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”Open Sans||||||||” text_font_size=”16px” header_4_font=”Open Sans|600|||on||||” header_4_text_color=”#000000″ header_4_font_size=”16px” text_orientation_tablet=”center” text_orientation_phone=”center” text_orientation_last_edited=”on|phone” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Degrees and Certificate Programs
