Our laboratory, together with a number of others, found that acute exposure to environmental stressors produced a robust analgesic response, whereas chronic repeated exposure to environmental stressors produced adaptation to this same response in a manner similar to the time course of opiate analgesic tolerance. Subsequent findings indicated that certain stressors (or even specific parameters of the same stressor) produced analgesia mediated by the opioid system, whereas other stressors (or different parameters of the same stressor) produced analgesia independent of the opioid system. Similar patterns of analgesic responses identified stressors mediated by the pituitary gland, whereas others acted independently of this system. This led to the formulation of four different types of analgesic stressors: a) opioid-neural; b) opioid-neurohormonal; c) nonopioid-neural; and d) nonopioid-neurohormonal. Given the existence of different mechanisms of pain inhibition, a collateral inhibition hypothesis and been tested and demonstrated whereby activation of one pain-inhibitory system produces analgesia, yet reduces the activation of a second pain-inhibitory system, allowing for a hierarchical organization of activation of multiple pain-inhibitory systems.

Related Publications of the Bodnar Laboratory:

Hopkins, E, M Spinella, ZW Pavlovic and RJ Bodnar.
