Online I-20 Extensions for F-1 Students<\/b><\/h2>\n

Carefully read the instructions listed below to ensure you remain in legal status. The program end date on your I-20 should always reflect your actual period of study. If you require additional classes to finish your academics, you may be able to apply for an extension of your I-20.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I-20 Extensions Eligibility and Compelling Academic Reasons<\/strong><\/h2>\n

To be eligible for an extension, you must meet the following criteria:<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Maintain Valid Status:<\/strong> You must currently be in valid F-1 status.<\/li>\n
  • Timely Application:<\/strong> Your I-20 must still be active (the end date must not have passed).<\/li>\n
  • Academic Justification:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have a compelling academic reason for the delay, such as:\n
      \n
    • Change in major<\/li>\n
    • Required course sequence took longer than expected<\/li>\n
    • Final degree audit revealed additional required courses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Academic Restrictions: Reasons Not Allowed<\/strong><\/h2>\n
        \n
      • I-20 extensions are not granted for non-academic reasons like job plans or timing OPT.
        The following academic reasons also do not qualify:<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
      • Retaking failed or low-grade courses<\/li>\n
      • Finishing \u201cIncomplete\u201d courses<\/li>\n
      • Academic probation or suspension<\/li>\n
      • Taking extra classes to improve GPA<\/li>\n
      • Delaying graduation to stay in F-1 status or to time OPT<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Extension Deadlines & Timing<\/h2>\n

        You must submit your I-20 extension request before<\/strong> the program end date listed on your current I-20.
        Important:<\/strong> We cannot extend your I-20 if your request is submitted after the end date, this will result in you falling out of status<\/em>, which has serious immigration consequences<\/p>\n

        • Requests are accepted 30 to 90 days before<\/strong> the program end date listed on your current I-20.<\/li>\n
        • We strongly recommend submitting your request at least 30 days before<\/strong> the I-20 end date to allow enough time for processing and review.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Extension Application<\/h2>\n

          To request an extension of your I-20, you must:
          Completed the ISS extension request form at least\u00a0one month before<\/strong>\u00a0your current document expires.<\/p>\n

          Financial support documentation<\/h2>\n

          Updated proof of one year of funding is required. Please carefully follow the financial documentation instructions listed at the top of the Extension Form.<\/p>\n
